Female Genital Mutilation is one of the Harmful Traditional Practices that is forcefully being subjected to girls, in the name of ‘Tradition’. Millions of girls in Africa have undergone FGM, exposing them to HIV infection, infertility and psychological devastation among others. The struggle to eliminate FGM has not materialized in most of the African countries where it is practiced. Policies and legislations put in place have not been satisfactorily enforced, could be due to strong established beliefs towards this practice. It is believed traditionally that it is a passage from immature to mature stage of a girl/woman and perceived to enhance genital cleanliness, safe guarding community values and to regulate or control sexual behavior of female members of society. This is a call for implementation of international agreements, national legislation and policies in support of gender equality and reproductive rights. It is to seek governments and International Non Governmental Organizations' support to advocate for the development of gender related laws, formulation and enforcement of policies against harmful traditional practices, FGM being a priority.
