Currently baby ear piercing is legal in UK This carries no benefit for the child and causes permanent damage to the child's body.As with any surgical procedure it carries a risk of complications such as infection . It may also cause further injury such a split ear lobe when a child's earring is caught during play. The backs of earrings ( butterflies) also can become embeddded in the ear lobe requiring another painful procedure to have the ear cut and the earring back removed.The procedure of ear piercing causes pain and requires the child to be restrained whilst the ears are pierced. We consider this a breach of human rights and an act not in the childs best interest. We propose that the practice should be made illegal, and that piercing should not be allowed until the child has capacity to make their own decisions.
