The law prohibits minors from purchasing, attempting to purchase, or making a false statement to purchase alcoholic beverages. Like the ban on selling to minors, the ban was adopted as part of the original Liquor Control Act in 1933. Therefore, the right to purchase alcohol exists for all at the age of 21 and older. There is no current law taking away this right. It is understood that people want to sit back and drink a beer after a long week of work, or those on vacation want to have a good time wherever they are. However, every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes. And the annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $59 billion. Fines, prison, ignition interlocks, and license suspensions are all great when it comes to preventing repeat offenders, but these aren’t eliminating the source of the problem.

The Plan:

  • Stop the problem at the source
  • Take away the privilege of purchasing alcohol by putting an icon on a license prohibiting the owner of this right. This would last for 3 years starting when charged for a 2nd DUI offense. They would be able to get a license without the icon after 3 years.
  • For 3rd and subsequent offenders: 3 years are added on to the current time prohibiting the person of this right. (If this is the first offence in 3+ years they are prohibited from purchasing for 3 years.)

This isn't a guarantee that drinking and driving will be eliminated but it is a step toward stopping the problem at the source. This is an attempt to make society safer, NOT an attack on freedom.
