To the staff of Theater Diligentia in The Hague,

We write to you regarding the Jerusalem Quartet's planned performance on 27 February and the moral objections to it, which we think Diligentia, as the city of The Hague's stage for quirky humour, should not want to be associated with. The following motivation has been provided by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), advocating for Palestinian freedom, equality, and justice since 2004.

It is clear that, especially in light of the events since the attacks on October 7, with the disproportionate use of force by the Israeli state in Gaza and the Palestinian territories, the death toll of Palestinian lives has exceeded 27,000 and continues to rise daily. This urgency is more pressing than ever. Notably, South Africa's charge against Israel for alleged genocide has been accepted by the International Court of Justice, situated in The Hague, making the situation even more poignant.

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) reiterates its call to boycott the Jerusalem Quartet for the following reasons:

1. Complicity with the Israeli government: The Jerusalem Quartet has repeatedly collaborated with the Israeli government in its propaganda programs.

2. Government funding and support: The quartet tours under initiatives funded, sponsored, or organized by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions.

3. Art-washing: The quartet has used its music during international performances to 'art-wash' and conceal documented crimes of the Israeli regime against Palestinians.

4. Lack of recognition of Palestinian rights: As an Israeli cultural institution, the quartet does not acknowledge the rights of Palestinians under international law.

The quartet's longstanding collaboration with the far-right Israeli government is part of the Brand Israel program to openly justify war crimes through culture. As a senior official of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs admitted, "We see culture as a hasbara [propaganda] tool of the first rank, and I make no distinction between hasbara and culture." This approach aims to present a more favorable image of Israel, diverting attention from the context of war.

PACBI, one of the founders of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement for Palestinian rights, has garnered support from international human rights advocates in various locations worldwide, protesting against the Jerusalem Quartet's blatant complicity with Israel's far-right oppressive regime.

We call for peaceful, creative protests against the Jerusalem Quartet's international concerts.

We hope the above is enough reason for you to speak your moral heart and remove the Jerusalem Quartet's performance from your programme.

Aan de directie van Theater Diligentia,

Wij schrijven u over het geplande optreden van het Jerusalem Quartet op 27 februari en de morele bezwaren die hieraan kleven, waarvan wij denken dat Diligentia, als hét podium voor eigenzinnige humor van de stad Den Haag, daar niet mee geassocieerd zou moeten willen worden. Onderstaande motivatie hiervoor, is opgesteld door de PACBI die zich sinds 2004 sterk maakt voor de Palestijnse vrijheid, gelijkheid en gerechtigheid. Het mag duidelijk zijn, dat dit vandaag de dag waarop sinds de aanvallen van 7 oktober met buitenproportioneel geweld van de Israëlische staat gereageerd is op Gaza en de Palestijnse gebieden, het dodental aan Palestijnse mensenlevens de 27.000 heeft gepasseerd en dagelijks oploopt, urgenter is dan ooit tevoren. Het is dan ook niet voor niets dat de aanklacht van Zuid-Afrika tegen Israël voor vermeende genocide is aangenomen bij het Internationaal Gerechtshof. Ook gezeteld in Den Haag, wat het des te pijnlijker maakt.

De Palestijnse Campagne voor de Academische en Culturele Boycot van Israël (PACBI) herhaalt haar oproep tot de boycot van het Jeruzalem Kwartet vanwege:

1. Medeplichtigheid met de Israëlische regering: het Jeruzalem kwartet heeft herhaaldelijk samengewerkt met de Israëlische regering in haar propagandaprogramma's.

2. Overheidsfinanciering en -steun: Het kwartet toert onder initiatieven die worden gefinancierd, gesponsord of georganiseerd door het Israëlische Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en diplomatieke missies.

3. Art-washing: Het kwartet gebruikte zijn muziek om tijdens zijn internationale optredens de gedocumenteerde misdaden van het Israëlische regime tegen de Palestijnen te 'art-washen' en te verdoezelen.

4. Gebrek aan erkenning van Palestijnse rechten: Het kwartet erkent als Israëlische culturele instelling de rechten van Palestijnen onder het internationaal recht niet.

De langdurige samenwerking van het Kwartet met de extreemrechtse Israëlische regering maakt deel uit van het Brand Israel-programma om oorlogsmisdaden openlijk goed te praten door middel van cultuur. Zoals een hooggeplaatste functionaris van het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken toegaf: "We zien cultuur als een hasbara [propaganda] middel van de eerste rang, en ik maak geen onderscheid tussen hasbara en cultuur". Op deze manier laat je het mooiere gezicht van Israël zien, zodat er niet alleen aan ons wordt gedacht in de context van oorlog."

PACBI is een van de oprichters van de Boycot, Desinvestering en Sancties beweging voor Palestijnse rechten. Ook Internationale mensenrechtenaanhangers, waaronder in Edinburgh, Brighton, Londen, Birmingham, Rotterdam, Lissabon, Californië, Kentucky, Toronto en Nieuw-Zeeland, hebben geprotesteerd tegen de schaamteloze medeplichtigheid van het Jeruzalem Kwartet aan Israëls extreem-rechtse onderdrukkingsregime.

Wij roepen op tot vreedzame, creatieve protesten tegen de internationale concerten van het Jeruzalem Kwartet.

Wij hopen dat bovenstaande voor u genoeg reden is uw morele hart te laten spreken en het optreden van het Jerusalem Quartet van uw programma te schrappen.
