STOP the Appropriation of Women at UW-Superior!
Minstrel shows have been condemned by the public for generations. Although the exaggerated mockery of minoritized groups has been universally condemned, on November 11th 2023 (Veteran’s Day), The UWS Gender Equity Resource Center proposes to have performers paint their faces, dress in stereotypical and sexualized garb, and present an exaggerated performance that makes a mockery of the dignity of womanhood and femininity. Drag performances stereotype aspects of womanhood in cartoon-like extremes, debasing women for the entertainment of others.
Regardless of the stated intent, drag shows are denigrating and misogynistic. Performances that degrade a group of people – in this case, women – should not be supported on our campus. Just as UW-Superior would rightly denounce a blackface performance, so too should our campus denounce the demeaning practice of drag. The dignity of women should not be mocked through a slapstick side show that is hosted and supported by a public university.
Just weeks ago, a Federal judge upheld West Texas A&M University president Walter Wenderll’s decision to cancel a campus-based drag show last March, stating that “The First Amendment does not prevent school officials from restricting vulgar and lewd conduct.”
In the interests of promoting an atmosphere of respect toward the women on our campus, we the undersigned respectfully request the UW-Superior administration to cancel the GERC-sponsored drag show currently scheduled for November 11th 2023.
