Minstrel shows have been condemned by the public for generations. Although the exaggerated mockery of minoritized groups has been universally condemned, on November 11th 2023 (Veteran’s Day), The UWS Gender Equity Resource Center proposes to have performers paint their faces, dress in stereotypical and sexualized garb, and present an exaggerated performance that makes a mockery of the dignity of womanhood and femininity. Drag performances stereotype aspects of womanhood in cartoon-like extremes, debasing women for the entertainment of others.

Regardless of the stated intent, drag shows are denigrating and misogynistic. Performances that degrade a group of people – in this case, women – should not be supported on our campus. Just as UW-Superior would rightly denounce a blackface performance, so too should our campus denounce the demeaning practice of drag. The dignity of women should not be mocked through a slapstick side show that is hosted and supported by a public university.

Just weeks ago, a Federal judge upheld West Texas A&M University president Walter Wenderll’s decision to cancel a campus-based drag show last March, stating that “The First Amendment does not prevent school officials from restricting vulgar and lewd conduct.”

In the interests of promoting an atmosphere of respect toward the women on our campus, we the undersigned respectfully request the UW-Superior administration to cancel the GERC-sponsored drag show currently scheduled for November 11th 2023.

The emails I receive from those who dismiss our concerns are draining but they only prove why this work is necessary. We are pushing for a meeting with the administration regardless of their current silence. This process is difficult and slow yet I remain committed to seeing us through.

UNACCEPTABLE. Public universities should be teaching respect, not hosting caricatures that mock womanhood.

Why should my tax payer dollars support a show that denigers my feminity? Please stop the plans of bringing this drag show to the UW Superior campus.

I respect people who live by different lifestyles but do not want women to be depicted in a manner that is abnormal to their human anatomy. In reference to womens human anatomy, the individuals are performing an abnormal performance, which is depicting women. Therefore, they should not have the final say in how women should be depicted or by who. Personally, I use to support members of the LGBTQ community until i realized the effect pride had on myself and on such individuals. Since then, I no longer support individuals who display themselves as the opposite sex when not having been born as such, and have succesfully seperated the sin from the person. I also use to support commedians who depicted the opposite sex without having been born as such. With that being said, I will be more careful of the media i expose myself to, and I will sign this petition in the hopes that the men who are portraying women will want to return to being men and admire women without having to attempt a literal portrayal of them.

Such a "performance" should not be held on a university campus.
