Our neighbors at 601-625 Steiner Street, has proposed a new building on their site at 625 Steiner Street. We oppose this for the following reasons:

No Notice Given, No Community Input

We learned from our neighbors that Ohlhoff had filed to build a classroom in the remaining space in the 625 Steiner yard. Ohlhoff claims to have sent a letter to neighbors, but at least 5 of the nearest neighbors did not receive letters.

Ahistorical Construction, Trailers

We strongly believe that the buildings and the neighborhood benefit from their character and history. The restoration of surrounding buildings in this historic district has been a wonderful development, but the Ohlhoff proposal would reverse that trend. Many ahistorical structures have been built around the two main buildings, particularly the trailers in the rear.

Lack of care and restoration

When work began at 601 Steiner last year, we hoped to see the building restored, after 20 or 30 years of deferred maintenance. We were disappointed with the shoddiness of the work. The aluminum siding was not replaced; no restoration was done to the rotting woodwork or decaying window frames; there was only spraypainting over rotted wood, dirt, vines and even cobwebs. Huge patches of the house remained unpainted.

Yard and Green Space

Historical buildings also benefit having a "setting"-- a yard, gardens and trees. Two adjacent neighbors at 635 Steiner and 1027 Hayes recently removed a porch and a 1940s building from their backyard, restoring the original green space and constructing gardens. The proposed construction would fill the yard of 625 Steiner.

About Us

We are Alamo Square neighbors who wish to preserve the character of our neighborhood. We understand that Ohlhoff wishes to expand their services--a worthy desire, certainly--but the property can't accommodate their aspirations without compromising the integrity of the built environment. We fear the construction of more ahistorical buildings in an already crowded yard. We value the preservation of backyard green space. We would prefer there not be more buildings that are poorly constructed, badly maintained and at risk, perpetually, of fire.
