State Highway 22-110 Speed Limit Reduction
A PETITION TO
Town of Royalton
Town of Little Wolf
Waupaca County Highway Department
Wisconsin Department of Transportation
We, the undersigned, petition to lower the speed limit from 45MPH to 35MPH on State Highway 22-110 for the approximate 1.3 mile stretch between Bear Lake Road and County Road BB in the Townships of Royalton and Little Wolf, Waupaca County, WI. This stretch of road has become increasingly hazardous to area residents who live along the highway, visitors to Bear Lake Campground, and other travelers on the highway.
Key factors include but are not limited to:
- Poor line of sight due to s-bend and elevation changes within the highway throughout the stretch resulting in numerous blind driveways and near miss collisions. In the roughly 1.3 mile stretch, there are approximately twenty-five homes with direct access to State Highway 22-110.
- Significant increase in traffic with a high volume of class 8 heavy vehicle traffic. The following elements play a crucial role in volume.
- 2023 campground expansion increasing site capacity by 24% and campground events result in high volume of patrons entering and exiting State Highway 22-110, including many with pull behind camper trailers.
- Gravel/rock quarry west of Bear Lake results in significant dump truck volume. Trucks leverage this section of roadway as their main route to Waupaca/Fox Cities in support of ongoing state highway projects.
- Seasonal traffic due to many local events leveraging State Highway 22-110 as primary thoroughfare.
- Excessive speeds, many faster than the posted 45MPH despite the high density of residential homes, driveways, and campground traffic. A 2019 speed survey indicated the average violator speed was greater than 57MPH.
As noted above, we, the undersigned, petition the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and whatever authority is applicable, to decrease the speed limit within the designated stretch of State Highway 22-110 from 45MPH to 35MPH.
