Dear Mr. Lucas, By now the fans of the Star Wars films have recognized that your movies are never finished, or "abandoned" as you have said when you first revisited the films. With the newest changes made to the original series for the saga's Blu-Ray release, the fans of Star Wars can clearly see there was still work which needed to be done, and appreciate the changes which you have made. However, we are sure that upon watching these newest versions, they, as well as yourself, will also notice that there is work to be done still. We would like to take a more active part in the next step forward for your films and offer the following suggestions: 1) Dub Alec Guinness' lines with Ewan McGregor's voice. While Mr. Guinness gave an iconic performance as the Obi-Wan Kenobi, it is clear that the character has been redefined by Ewan's version of the character. Not only did Ewan have more screen time as young Obi-Wan than Alec did as the older “Ben” Kenobi, but his performance was also more recent. The only flaw in his portrayal is that his voice and dialect did not entirely match with that of Mr. Guinness', which is why we believe a complete re-recording is needed. Much like you had Temuera Morrison record all of Jeremy Bulloch’s lines to fix the problem of two actors playing Boba Fett, we would have a more seamless depiction of Obi-Wan by replacing his original voice. If Mr. McGregor is not available, then we suggest James Arnold Taylor, the voice actor who currently provides Obi-Wan's voice "The Clone Wars" series to dub over both actors and provide the voice for Obi-Wan in all six films. 2) Convert Yoda’s movement as a puppet to a fully digital character. We understand that you have redone Yoda in CGI for the Blu-ray release of “The Phantom Menace,” but we do not understand why you stopped there. Yoda was more a puppet in “Empire” and “Jedi” than he was in “Phantom,” and therefore in far more need of being replaced. If you would like to keep Stuart Freeborn’s original design for the character, that’s fine, so long as he is fully digitized in some manner. Yoda is now recognized as having a newer, brighter, crisper, digital look that the puppet version simply doesn’t adhere to. Frank Oz gave a remarkable performance as Yoda, but his puppetry, however noteworthy and impressive it may be, is outdated. Since you already replaced Mr. Oz’s puppetry already for one film, we feel he won’t mind being fully replaced from the rest of the movies either. Oz’s skilled work as a puppeteer may be lost, just as Yoda’s comic personality and lovable charm may be lost with it, but aesthetic continuity is important to us. 3) In the climactic scene where Darth Vader ultimately decides to betray the Emperor and save his son, there is still a great deal of silence. Darth Vader watches Luke be shocked, then makes the decision to save him, and in doing so, he is shocked himself by Palpatine’s Force Lightning as he carries him to the edge of an endless shaft and throws him over to his demise. Through all this Vader manages to verbalize his disagreement to Emperor Palpatine, as well as the audience. The direction you decided to take is one which helps us to appreciate the scene and understand what Vader may be thinking, but the remaining silence leaves something to be desired. Perhaps a short monologue to the Emperor explaining his actions would bring this scene to its fullest potential. 4) Please continue in making all the suns, lightsabers, and other sources of light fully white to show their extreme brightness. Any lack of luminance whatsoever does not resonate with modern audiences. 5) Whenever a starfighter, a Death Star, or C-3P0 is destroyed, the explosions need more random debris to appear more genuine; something you corrected with R2-D2 when shot by a stormtrooper, but with nothing else. 6) Obi-Wan’s Krayt Dragon call still fails to sound believable. We know you and your team have worked hard to correct this since the beginning, and you are very close, but it still does not sound quite like a Krayt Dragon. 7) Feel free to expand on Han and Greedo’s quarrel in the cantina. We would even love a full battle scene. 8) Finally, please do not hesitate to add any remaining scenes which were not deemed worthy enough to make the original theatrical release, special editions, or DVD releases. We’re sure they’re fine and whatever decisions which led them to being omitted in the first, second, and third place had nothing to do with their relevance or the quality of the films. We thank you greatly for considering us once again as you further your quest to bring the Star Wars films to a recognized perfection. We understand maintaining continuity between all six films and the epic narratives they house is a difficult task, and we recognize your efforts to uphold aesthetic continuity and visual spectacle in your alterations. We value these qualities greatly, as they are such important principles to any artistic work, even classified under Aristotle’s poetics, and we want your alterations to succeed in bettering the films. Your latest changes are great steps in the right direction to rectify imperfections in otherwise impeccable movies, and all we are suggesting is that you continue in this direction to the end. We want you to be happy with your movies. Thank you for letting us help in any way.
