I want to help our school start composting through the signing of a petition to participate in a composting program. I believe this to be the most effective and basic way to help our environment and am hoping this to work. Composting is the simple concept of collecting all of leftover biodegradable trash and using it to make other resources, such as compost. Composting is crucial to school cafeterias due to the large amount of food waste that is disposed of with garbage. All of this could be used instead of merely being dumped in landfills. Special disposal of organic waste also leads to a more sanitary environment due the separation of the messier waste. Composting is also more economic due to the payments made for larger garbage disposal. Each Canadian, on average, produces an astonishing 2.2 kilograms of waste each day. That's 30 million tonnes of waste in total each year! What happens to this trash? It may disappear from our curbs, but it doesn't disappear from the planet. Some gets recycled or recovered and some is burned, but the majority is buried in landfills.
