The SRA in an investigation conducted by the former chair of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), Lord Herman Ouseley has been accused of racism, discrimination and victimization of lawyers from black asian minority groups. The study was commissioned following pressure from Bridgette Prentice MP, Junior Minsiter of Justice and Keith Vaz MP, and chair of Home Affairs Select Committee with support by minority lawyers’ groups which included the Society of Black Lawyers; the Society of Asian Lawyers; the Association of Muslim Lawyers and the Black Solicitors Network. Lord Ouseley’s report also cited a glaring “lack of leadership” and “a culture of bias” against ethnic minority solicitors, leading to a disproportionate number experiencing serious interference with their professional practice and reputation. The report goes further to quote the Chief Executive of SRA, Antony Townsend, who indicated that progress has been lacking in a number of areas and that there was no sufficient leadership to the values of equality and diversity. We therefore ask for the resignation of SRA board to pave way for a more inclusive and fair management at SRA who value all lawyers based on the profession and not on the color of the skin.
