Call for SPU to Address LGBTQ+ Policy Failure

Thank you for hearing our voices in that same sex marriage or sex is not bad, wrong nor should be avoided: update your archaic stance on the morality topic

As a graduate of SPU I am disgusted and heart broken you are deciding to eliminate a population from your staff. Shame on you

This is despicable. Change your roles or leave this city.

It’s 2022 no one should be treated differently because of who they love.

This is wrong’. Do the right thing by our community.

I pray the SPU board opens their minds, open their hearts and reconsider their bigoted decision. God created all of us.

This kind of discrimination is NOT OK. Ask yourself “What Would Jesus Do?”

This bigoted policy against employees who are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community needs to be reversed!! SPU is showing their true colors of hypocrisy. I stand in solidarity with SPU instructors and staff who are in same-sex relationships. This policy should be illegal and not tolerated!

While I did not go to your school I am shocked and saddened by your recent decision to discriminate against employees with same-sex partners. I am a teacher and a parent and I am concerned about the message you send to everyone that it is ok to discriminate against any group of people. I urge you to reconsider your policy.

You are fortunate to have amazing LGBTQ faculty now and in the future, but only if they are supported. I am also a parent of a student-athlete who had SPU at the top of their list. We will not allow our son to attend a discriminatory school.

Until today I was proud to tell people I graduated from SPU. I don't *want* my answer to change, but after being reminded how little SPU has changed since I graduated in 2005 (the year they last updated their Statement on Human Sexuality), unfortunately it needs to. I can't help but think how different my life would be if I had had the courage to tell the world I was gay while at SPU. While the institution may not have surrounded me with love, I know 100% my friends would have. It's disheartening to think that today, there still is a student who is also afraid to come out while attending SPU. That one, is one too many. Shame on you, SPU.  

It is far past time for SPU to acknowledge that Christianity does not mean ostracizing and denying opportunities to LGBTQ people.

I pray that SPU will have the courage and conviction to treat our gay and straight brothers and sisters in Christ as equals. I hope that SPU will choose the right side of history and stand in Jesus’ overwhelming love for his people.

Class of 2016

As an Alumna and Bisexual Woman, I had hoped that in years to come SPU would learn the error of their ways. That the world does not need their way of discrimination anymore. Sadly, it looks like this has not changed. I will not be helping fund SPU anytime soon, and will caution my younger family from attending a university that holds such dated and offensive views.

Saddened that my Alma Mater allowed this to happen. Please address this injustice.

Doing better is long over due.

This deeply saddens me as an alumni, particularly since SPU is a well known school in Seattle which houses a very large LGBTQ population. Our LGBTQ community should feel supported and not discriminated against. They should be met with the same respect as anyone else. Please review this decision and consider changing your policies. This action is shameful on behalf of the school and is embarrassing to your alumni.
