Without the identities of the students reflected in the people they learn from (specifically POC in this instance), there will be a disconnect to the academics they are partaking in. If SPU were to take these same standards and apply them to the professors at SPU in a religious sense, there would be no professors able to work at SPU. I can only hope that gives some insight to the ridiculous standard that SPU is using to oppress the education of colored students within their institution. Cutting an entire faculty line from the Sociology Program is an injustice to the students and every bit a way for SPU to continue their fundamentalist ways.

I am signing this petition because I am concerned about both the lack of commitment on the part of the administration toward the goal of diversification of faculty and also the loss of Sociology of Medicine. Please consider reinstating two faculty lines for Sociology.

14 professors are leaving this year, and only 7 are being hired back. This is not an attack or a kind of discrimination against the Sociology Department. With its relatively small size, it deserves no special status. The attempts to justify increased rent-seeking in a time of extremely limited resources are overblown exaggerations.

This is an unreasonable demand. At a time when SPU's enrollment is down and many departments are making cutbacks, the idea that we should prioritize a department which already has seven faculty (substantially more than other comparable majors like economics or political science, who have far more students in those majors) is patently unreasonable.

As someone who worked with SPU's premed students, this loss would not bode well for the prehealth program. To cut sociology at this time would be an epic mistake and send the wrong signal to would be prehealth students! Please fund these positions fully!

As a current SPU Sociology Senior, I cannot express enough the necessity of an approach towards an equitable and sustainable education for the students at this university; especially the students of Color, who desperately need the support of faculty of color. Hiring two highly qualified (both through lived and educational experience) individuals is a bare minimum necessity for the Sociology department. For the sake of our world, of our society, for the sake of the people. This administration has already failed it's students and owes them, at the very least, the resources and insight that could be provided via the hiring of both Dr. Mondesir and Dr. Tom.

As a recent graduate of SPU's sociology department, my life has been enriched because of my education there. With one entire less faculty line, my education in this major would have been of magnitudes less depth, breadth, and quality. If this faculty line is cut, generations of students will suffer academically and in their post-grad careers. I stand with the sociology department and all of the humanities against this cut and in favor of hiring the two professors of color!
