I think that this new start time would not be beneficial towards the education of students and don't see any benefits of moving the start time even further back. I think that this start time would make it even harder to juggle homework, sports and extracurricular activities by decreasing the amount of time at the end of the day to do homework.

This makes it very difficult for a lot of students. The schools don't take that into account they say they are doing the best for the child when they are just being selfish. How about actually doing things for the students once.

I have a student in an after school team activity and I feel that the later start times are not going to give these kids the chance to get home, get something to eat, do homework and get ready to go to practice. For the kids that have after school jobs, this is going to make for long days and nights. When are these kids supposed to have a LIFE?

In the winter we would be getting out of school in practically dark. It takes me an hour to get home. With home work and dinner I wouldn't have time for any outside commitment, which is required with doing orchestra in school and musicals and plays. And if I have to stay after school for make-up tests I'll be there even later. Please don't change school start times

On a good day I get home an hour and a half after school gets out, and that's when sports aren't going on. With sports I won't be getting home until 730-8pm. Homework is then a nightmare to try to finish in time and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Please don't change the times.

The later start time is a terrible idea. I'm a student at RHS and playing footbal we will only have 1:30 hour practices after school and we have to go in at 7 every morning to do morning practice. It's a terrible idea to start later please do not!

I participate in the jazz program at Roosevelt High School. We have rehearsals that start at 3:30 and go till 5:00. At this rate if the change is made, I would end up having rehearsal that starts at 4:05 and end at 5:35. This would then mean that I’d be home at 6:15 roughly (or even later if I had to rely on a bus) and I would still have to complete any homework I have, eat dinner, and shower. At that point, I’d easily end up saying good bye to any social life I wish to carry because I would not be able to put time aside to hang out with my friends or even my family. Also, SPS is not considering the coordination between Metro buses that students rely on to get to and from school. As it is right now, I end up having to walk 40+ blocks to get home because of buses being late. I would much sooner go back to the original 7:50-2:20 schedule that I used to have from 6th grade to 10th grade than have this new change. That way, I could rely on buses to get me home at a reasonable hour, I could put aside a good amount of time for homework and any social activities. Life would be easier to manage and less stressful. As for reasoning for this change, I’m conpletely dumbfounded. SPS has been claiming that one of the most compelling reasons for the proposed change is because of teenage tendencies to stay up later at night. And while there may be studies that show that this is true, the main factor that goes into why some of us teenagers actually don’t sleep, is the course load of homework that is dealt with on a daily basis. Everything seems nice and easy for a while for a good, long time... until all of a sudden you have two big projects, a lab write-up, a 5-7 page paper and an audition all hitting you at the same time. Not only is this course load a major reason for myself getting less sleep but for me personally, I suffer from a minor case of insomnia that randomly occurs. Neither of these two things are addressed in these schedule changes and I am aggravated that they aren’t

I barely have enough time for homework as it is. If a teacher can't teach all the criteria in the amount of time we have now, they aren't going to be able to do it in the small amount of time they're adding to classes and it's not going to suddenly help students learn.
