Hearing a murmur in a real person is much different than hearing a recording. The recordings are supposed to help you hear the murmur easily, but working with SPs makes you develop the skills necessary to hear a murmur in the first place. I think it is a disservice to student medical education to discontinue hiring SPs for the lab.

This lab was extremely useful in learning to diagnose different murmurs. The ability to try different maneuvers and see their effect on the murmur was crucial to understanding timing and mechanics of murmurs, as well as just being able to listen to a real murmur. PLEASE DONT GET RID OF THESE SP’S! It would be a huge disservice to future students if this lab were removed.

It was incredibly helpful to have real murmurs to listen too. Recordings and text book explanations fall short. It was an honor to have the SP's come in.

It would be nice to even have a cardiology elective where these SPs were available so upper classes can get more practice with heart murmurs
