As a former student of McCurdy Charter School and having a sibling who attends McCurdy currently, sports are vital aspect to the school’s environment. This year is no different; despite being in a pandemic, our students should be able to play sports, especially seniors. I have seen my brother first-hand be disappointed about not being able to peruse basketball for his senior year, and I am hoping that he won’t have to experience that same disappointment with track. In addition, many seniors rely on sports to find scholarships for college, and to find more success within their futures. In accordance with the governor’s and the NMPED’s requirement that schools must offer hybrid learning in order to participate in athletics, I believe that both students and teachers can find success within a hybrid model. We have experienced online learning for almost a whole year now, and I believe that it’s time that our students should be able to play their sports. And, with the majority of McCurdy parents favoring that their child will stay in remote mode, I believe that McCurdy can find success both in hybrid mode and in the participation of sports.

It’s been a very long and grueling year for students. I’m sure parents have taken all safety precautions to keep their children safe. It’s up to the administration now to allow these students to play.

The students are getting very bored. Exercise and competition is exactly what they need right now!

Senior athletes have been affected most negatively and should now be allowed to participate in sports.

As a former teacher and coach at MCS I used sports as a way to recruit students into something they might not try at a big school. It gave them something safe to try while allowed me to have them more focused in the classroom since I would do a weekly grade check. It was beneficial for educational and extracurricular activities.

Hello I am a student athlete at Mesa Vista High School. Our school had decided to go into hybrid mode and allow us to play sports. The students at our school had the decision to go back to school in person or stay learning online. Majority of the athletes decided to go back. At our school we are always social distancing ourselves from each other and we have our temperatures taken at least every 30 minutes to a hour. As an athlete in these times during the virus it was horrible having to wait a whole year to play again. Most kids here in northern New Mexico have trouble getting into colleges because their families are poor and the reason they play sports is so they can get recognized by recruiters for a scholarship. There were many kids that have committed suicide because of not being able to play. Please consider your decisions and allow the students to play sports.

As students, we are struggling to stay motivated to stay on top of our work. The athletes at our school usually have the best grades in the school because we have a reason to keep them up. We had motivation. We had an incentive. Not only will having the ability to play sports this year will help us physically and mentally (especially the seniors who, after this year, may never get to play their sport(s) again), but it will give us motivation and a sense of purpose to maintain good grades. I know I look forward to playing sports every year. My favorite, most memorable times that I have had at this school is playing sports with my friends. Long bus rides, interesting talks over dinner. That’s what I look forward to the most, but now I’m being told that we may not be able to this year. I have never been so unmotivated in my life. 2020 was the worst year of my life (and most of ours), and the possibility of not being able to play sports this year is making it worse. Please. LET US PLAY!!!!!
