This petition is exclusively for members of the Association of Lansing Christian School.

The Association consists of three groups of people:

  1. All parents and guardians of children attending Lansing Christian School
  2. All regularly scheduled full-time and part-time LCS employees who have signed the Doctrinal Statement
  3. Approved community members who have applied, signed the Doctrinal Statement, and been approved by the Board based on their time and financial commitment to the school

Over the past several months, many members of the LCS community have expressed a desire for clearer communication, healthy governance processes, and stronger long-term accountability structures within the school. In response, we are respectfully requesting a Special Meeting of the Association in accordance with the procedures already established in the LCS Constitution and Board policies.

The purpose of this meeting is not to revisit individual decisions or create further division, but to follow the documented process available to Association members when constitutional and governance questions arise. The proposed amendments are intended to clarify and strengthen accountability relationships between the Board and the Association while continuing to respect appropriate confidentiality regarding personnel and legal matters.

Many nonprofit membership organizations, Christian schools, and association-based governance models include formal accountability mechanisms such as member review processes, special meeting rights, and clearly defined procedures for addressing governance concerns. While LCS has important safeguards already in place, several of these common accountability structures are currently absent or only minimally defined within the existing Constitution. These amendments are intended to help address those gaps in a constructive and orderly way.

Our hope is that these amendments will help provide clearer processes, improve trust in governance structures, and support the long-term health and unity of Lansing Christian School.

Under the Constitution, a Special Meeting request must be supported by signatures from at least one-fourth of the Association membership in order to be formally called. If you believe a vote on these proposed amendments would benefit the school and Association, we invite you to prayerfully review them and consider adding your signature to the petition.

REQUEST FOR SPECIAL MEETING OF THE LANSING CHRISTIAN SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
To the President and Secretary of the Lansing Christian School Board of Trustees:

We, the undersigned members of record of the Lansing Christian School Association, respectfully request that a special meeting of the Association be called pursuant to Article V, Section 3 of the Constitution of Lansing Christian School.

Article V, Section 3 provides that special meetings may be called at any time by the School Board or by the Board President, and that the Board President shall call a special meeting whenever requested in writing by at least one-fourth of the Association members of record, provided that such request states the reasons for calling the meeting.

Reason for Calling the Special Meeting
The reason for this request is to allow the Association to consider and vote on the following three proposed amendments to the Constitution of Lansing Christian School:

1. Association Review of Board Decisions and Policies
Proposed Amendment to Article V (Add new Section 8) and Article VII (Add new section 6):
To provide a clear and orderly process by which the Association may request formal review of a Board decision or policy when significant concern exists. This amendment does not remove the Board’s authority to govern, nor does it suspend or overturn Board action by itself. Rather, it seeks to strengthen communication, transparency, and confidence by requiring fuller explanation of how decisions are made, why they are made, and how they align with the Mission and purpose of Lansing Christian School.

2. Board Member Removal for Cause Amendment
Proposed Amendment to Article VI (Add new Section 6):
To provide a clear and orderly process for the removal of a Board member when serious cause exists. The Constitution currently provides for election, nomination, qualifications, and vacancy appointment of Board members, but does not set forth a process for removal. This amendment is intended to supply that process in a manner consistent with the governance structure of the Association and the Mission and purpose of Lansing Christian School.

3. Board Vacancy Accountability Amendment
Proposed Amendment to Article VI (Amend Section 4):
To preserve the orderly functioning of the School Board when a vacancy occurs, while restoring to the Association its ordinary role in the election of Board members. The current Constitution permits the School Board to fill vacancies occurring during the year by appointment to complete the term of office. This amendment would allow the Board to make a temporary appointment, but would require that the unexpired term be filled by election of the Association at the next regular meeting at which Board members are elected.

We request that the special meeting agenda include separate consideration and a separate vote on each proposed amendment. We further request that written notice of the special meeting be sent to all Association members of record at least two weeks prior to the meeting, in accordance with Article V, Section 5 of the Constitution.

Respectfully submitted,
Members of the Lansing Christian School Association

Association Review of Board Decisions and Policies

To the Lansing Christian School Association:
Pursuant to Article XI of the Constitution, we respectfully propose that the Association consider and vote upon the following amendment to the Constitution of Lansing Christian School.

Proposed Amendment to Article V
Add a new Section 8:

8. The Association may, at any regular meeting or at any special meeting called for that purpose, vote to require formal review of a decision or policy of the School Board. A petition requesting such review, signed by twenty-five members of record and stating the matter to be reviewed and the reasons for the review, shall be filed with the Secretary at least two weeks prior to the meeting of the Association at which it is to be considered. A majority of the votes cast shall be required to approve such review. Upon such approval, the School Board shall provide to the Association, within a reasonable time, a written report pursuant to Article VII, Section 6. Such review shall not of itself necessarily suspend or overturn the decision or policy under review.

Proposed Amendment to Article VII
Add a new Section 6:

6. When the Association has approved a formal review under Article V, the School Board shall provide an explanation sufficient to describe the process followed, the authority relied upon, the general rationale for the decision or policy, and how it is in accord with the Mission and purpose of Lansing Christian School, without requiring disclosure of confidential or privileged information protected by legal, contractual, or ethical duties.

Motion
That the Lansing Christian School Association approve the proposed amendment to Article V and Article VII of the Constitution as stated above.

To the Lansing Christian School Association:
Pursuant to Article XI of the Constitution, we respectfully propose that the Association consider and vote upon the following amendment to the Constitution of Lansing Christian School.

Proposed Amendment to Article VI
Add a new Section 6:

6. A Board member may be removed from office by the Association for conduct materially contrary to this Constitution or to the Mission and purpose of Lansing Christian School, or for failure faithfully to discharge the duties of office. Proceedings for removal shall be initiated only by petition signed by at least one-fourth of the Association members of record and filed with the Secretary at least two weeks prior to a regular meeting of the Association or a special meeting called for that purpose. The petition shall state the general grounds for removal with reasonable particularity sufficient to inform the Association of the nature of the concern, without requiring
disclosure of confidential or privileged information protected by legal, contractual, or ethical duties. The Board member named in the petition shall be given written notice and an opportunity to submit a written response to the Association before the vote is taken. Removal shall require the affirmative vote of a majority of all members of the Association. A vacancy thereby created shall be filled as otherwise provided by this Constitution.

Motion
That the Lansing Christian School Association approve the proposed amendment to Article VI of the Constitution as stated above.

---

To the Lansing Christian School Association:
Pursuant to Article XI of the Constitution, we respectfully propose that the Association consider and vote upon the following amendment to the Constitution of Lansing Christian School.

Proposed Amendment to Article VI
Amend Section 4 to read as follows:

4. Vacancies occurring during the year shall be filled by School Board appointment until the next regular meeting of the Association at which School Board members are elected. At such meeting, the Association shall elect a Board member to fill the unexpired term. Any person appointed by the School Board to fill a vacancy must meet the qualifications otherwise required by this Constitution.

Motion
That the Lansing Christian School Association approve the proposed amendment to Article VI, Section 4 of the Constitution as stated above.

We need more transparency from the board. It feels like things are being decided behind closed doors and the parents are the last to know what is actually going on. Lets get this meeting scheduled.
