This petition, along with a letter to State Senator Pat O'Connor in an attempt to persuade him to propose legislation regarding how long a student with disabilities can stay in a public school system. As of right now, the day before their 22nd birthday is a student's last day in any public school system in the state. Of course, the parental guardian(s) of these students can send them to schools that specialize with treating certain disabilities, but some of these facilities can cost a lot of money. The current growth of this petition has reached a level that allows us to move forward with formal requests for meetings at the State House. I am finalizing the draft of our policy proposal now to ensure it is ready for the upcoming session with Senator O'Connor.

Ever so much important for the advancement and self esteem of these wonderful students requiring a little bit of xtra. My sister would have benefited signicantly.
This is such a critical time for these kids aging out. Allowing them to complete the school year with their fellow students will help them ease into an adult program.
Please increase the special education age in MA. It is such a terrifying time when your child is nearing 22 and the proverbial cliff. Thank you.
Our special needs students deserve support to help them develop fully and have the opportunity to become independent citizens.
Hi Kate, Since every case is different when dealing with disabilities such as autism, down-syndrome, md, etc., the criteria that each student would be required to meet would be personalized based on their specific needs. Regardless of age, I would like to see the public school systems try and help these students succeed in society slowly by giving them appropriate jobs that and would focus more on the outcome than their age. Noble goal and worth shouting about at a time when education budget is in danger of reorganization that might not protect those that need it most.
