Town of Riverhead: The undersigned are property owners of record of property to the west of the Reeves Park Town Public Beach. We have deeded property rights with the Northern-most boundary of Long Island Sound. We take pride in our properties and have the utmost respect for the natural beauty that this area holds. We have invested a great amount of time and money to maintain our properties. We have recently been subjected to the full wrath of mother nature, as have many on Long Island were, when Super-Storm Sandy hit in October 2012. We have done what we could to repair the damage, to protect our property and to safeguard the area that we have invested our life to. Despite our efforts, much work remains. We are asking for; no we are begging for help from the Town of Riverhead. During the summer and fall seasons, many visitors - tourists – our encouraged by the Town to come to our area to enjoy Riverhead’s Beaches. The visitors bring their families and friends, with picnic baskets, tents, and barbeques all for a fun day or two on the beach. They purchase their parking permit, but they do not go to the Town Beach at Reeves Park. These daily visitors walk west, past the Town beach to the remote areas, on our private property. This area is not protected by the Town for swimming; there are no garbage cans available; there are no bathroom facilities for use. Yet, our visitors are permitted (and encouraged) to go to these remote areas. As knowledgeable property owners, we are fully aware of the long-standing tradition in New York that the public enjoys a rite -of- way over a beach below the mean high tide line. We would never deprive any person the right to do so. However the rite -of -way does not give cause for individuals to trespass, to set up camp, to violate town and state laws and create a general nuisance through their abuse of the environment (by leaving refuse and human waste on the beach) that we residents cherish.. We may concede our property right for the rite -of –way. However, we do not believe it requires us to accept the unsafe and unsanitary conditions that are created. We also do not condone trespassing in any manner. Since the visitors are granted access to the area via the Town’s Property and the Town is charging a fee to do so (an encouraging the visitors to go to the west), the Town is culpable to the environmental violations and actions which create harmful, even dangerous conditions. Accordingly, we are pleading to you to take action as we have run out of options. As property owners and taxpayers of the Town of Riverhead, you have an obligation to protect our interests and control the behavior of these individuals – tourists and visitors who have been "invited" by the Town to come to the beach.
