On September 2, A group called "The AMCHA Initiative" published a "list of anti-Israel Middle East Studies Professors," warning students not to take classes with those professors because of their supposed bias. Most insidiously and slanderously, the group issued a further warning against "possibly even antisemitic rhetoric."
In the wake of the controversial and unconstitutional firing of Professor Steven Salita from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign because of tweets he sent in the heat of Israel's assault on Gaza, we, the undersigned faculty wish to express to administrators in the United States academy that we will not allow any more of our colleagues to be similarly targeted for expressing their conscience.
We clarify and reassert that positions against Israel's military assault on civilians in Gaza or Israeli state policies is not related to our skill as teachers, and we certainly reject in the strongest possible terms the slanderous accusation of anti-Semitism.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, pledge to stand by any of our colleagues who are targeted by this or any other such spurious effort to silence our speech or conscious.
