In the year 2005, the Government of Tanzania granted VAT exemptions on parts and equipment of solar and wind technologies. The exemptions enable the off-grid population access sustainable energy as equipment of solar and wind technologies are sold at affordable prices. Solar technology has enabled households improve the living environment and community service centres (schools and health facilities) improving the quality of services.
In the year 2013 the Government of Tanzania proposed review of VAT policy. The draft VAT policy review proposes the cancellation of VAT exemptions. Solar and wind technologies VAT exemptions will be also affected. The reintroduction of VAT on solar and wind technologies will reverse the current trend of off-grid communities accessing the sustainable modern energy. We request that you support our motion of advocating with Ministry of Finance retaining the VAT exemptions on solar and wind technologies.
