I urge NASW to take a stand against the revisionist narrative that replacing cops with social workers is an adequate response to the call to defund the police. Rather than an opportunity to further professionalize our field, this moment is highlighting the importance of community organizing and transformative social change. In their analysis and response to this executive order, I hope NASW considers who is being given a voice in devising solutions and making decisions about investment.

We, as social workers, do not want to partner with police. We want to see the NASW advocate to abolish the police system in its entirety. This is not a bandaid.

Listen. No one asked for “safe” policing. We are asking to defund and dismantle the police system because it is rooted in racism and oppression. You don’t build on a broken foundation. Let’s use resources to fund black and brown communities and let them reimagine and redesign the safety they need. And as SWs you should be hearing that cry and fighting with us.

This policy is not in line with social work ethics. We need to stand with defunding the police, dismantling white supremacy (including in our own profession), and build new systems the center the needs and experiences of black people and other oppressed groups!

The order fails to recognize the deep systemic racism at play, attempts to further engage social workers in policing, and strives solely to reform rather than defund a system rooted in white supremacy. It contradicts our values as Social Workers.

I refuse to support policing the community as a social worker cop. Different title, same racist BS.

The values of our profession go against this racist systems within which we are being asked to participate. It is dismantling these power structures and creating an anti-racist-focused structure with which to provide needed community resources would be the solution more befitting of what social work aims to stand for. We can do better and we will.
