We need to be working to uplift communities to the point they don't need social workers or police in the first place! Putting social workers in police stations is just slapping a new coat of paint on a building that has a crumbling foundation. LET'S DO BETTER!

As a recent BSW grad, starting my MSW in August, I demand that the NASW respond with social justice for Black Lives and the history of policing in mind. Let’s push for community funding instead of putting our lives on the line so Tr*mp can apply a weak bandaid.

Social workers and the communities we serve deserve better than this dangerous attempt at a “band-aid” fix for policing. Working alongside police departments is in direct violation of social work ethics and values.

Social workers in police departments is just policing reimagined. Social workers must work to dismantle the systems of oppression, and NASW’s support of the Executive Order is in fact supporting the harmful policing system.

Our profession has, since its earliest formations, often been used as an instrument of state violence and control. In this moment of hot political iron we must not cede our future to that history. Now is the time to seek fundamental, economic, and institutional change in the ways we handle justice and community health. Defund the police. BLM.
