The action taken by the NASW in this way has aligned this profession more with the racist and establishment side of viewpoints and those that are not widely shared, I believe, by most of us social workers with a conscience. It is time to reclaim, re-vitalize, and re-act.

This executive order does not address the structural problems that create the epidemic of police violence, including the fat that police are doing social work without social work training or social work ethical understanding.

Social work is supposed to support social justice. Social work is supposed to empower and advocate for clients. Support of the police is completely counterintuitive and disgusting!!

The social work profession has a long and complex history of silencing and harm among BIPOC people, in large part due to its relationship with the criminal legal system. We owe it to our ancestors to imagine this work without policing and carceral responses to trauma.
