Our kids are missing out on a lot this year, some things they will never get back. Our teachers are under an incredible strain, trying to deliver quality learning across 3 platforms with restraints no one has ever had to work with before. 2020 has taken so many things away from our kids and teachers, and now we're adding snow days to that list? There's a better solution.

Snow days are a magical unexpected break, a breather... a little gift from mother nature in the middle of long Maine winters. Are we really ready to take those away from our kids (and teachers) in this of all years??

Because of Covid and having to move so much online, we have the capability to have kids do work at home. But just because we can do it doesn't mean we should.

If the idea of extending the school calendar because of too many used snow days is unappealing, let's make an easy compromise that keeps some of our snow days but doesn't impact end-of-year calendars: build in 3 or 4 days and let the kids (and teachers!) have those days off! If we go over that built-in number, they could then move to the online system. This compromise keeps the magic of being a kid in Maine, and gives our teachers a well deserved break, while still keeping our end date from spilling into summer.

Please sign the petition to show your support for keeping snow days on the calendar in this fashion!

Some of the area schools keeping traditional snow days for students:

Brewer, Orono, Old Town, Glenburn, Hermon, Bangor Christian

*Several of these schools mentioned using a "compromise" model like the one described above.

I was just looking at the screen and realized how many people actually feel this same way about the magic of a real snow day, which is honestly wild because I started this feeling like maybe I was the only one worried about everyone burning out. It is huge to see this much momentum picking up so fast and it really proves that we all just need a little breather after the year we have had.

Our children have lost all sense of normalcy in these times and teachers and parents deserve the break they have always received when poor weather arrives. If we go over our allotted days then utilize virtual learning so that we aren’t adding days to the year but allow our kids to breathe.

Snow days provoque flickering internet, more work for teachers to clean their home or resolve issues if power outage and more stress on them. Both teachers and students should have a day off to relax or resolved weather situations. Please give back the snow days.

100% on board. The Bangor district has not considered the effects on morale, or what power outages will do to remote learning.

Snow days are the traditional day off from school. Any kid who truly enjoyed a break from academics and chores were the ones bundled up defending their forts, making snowmen, and sledding. It's also great for parents to have snow days with their kids. Parents have a mental break and enjoy being a kid again. Staying home and drinking hot chocolate with their kids.

As a parent, snow days are more than just a day off from school. It’s a chance for family time. Playing in the snow. A chance to be a kid! I have a hard time believing that teachers, especially those with children of their own, are in favor of not having snow days anymore. Teachers work so hard. It’s a day for them too.

Our children have had to make so many changes while in school that are precautions for Covid but are developmentally inappropriate. Don’t take school days away with work that is just busy work that can be sent out weeks ahead of a potential snow day
