I am a high school student, and I am here to say that using a quarter system is truly inconsiderate to students and teachers.
The quarter system places excessive pressure on students to retain content in a highly constricted amount of time, devaluing the learning experience and not taking into consideration that students are already immensely stressed from the widespread effects of the pandemic. All students will struggle to keep up with coursework.
Additionally, the quarter system is unequitable. AP students of different quarters will have unfair advantages over each other, and that is shameful; on top of that, people with mental illnesses and dealing with poverty need more time than other students. It is harder to make accomadations with less time.
Finally, teachers have already been dealing with a lot; my teachers from the previous school year were overworked due to creating new/adjusted material to teach their students in response to the pandemic. And you are telling me that it is a great idea to overwork teachers for a whole more year.
We are supposed to be making it easier for everyone, not more difficult. This plan is ignorant to the needs of both students and teachers.

I believe we need to find a way to support teachers and students in the fall. I feel like this structure will be to difficult for teachers to manage and do their true job teaching. The overhead and cost that I saw in the presentation concerns me. I know that there is no easy solution and I have the Ability and means to support my student but I think more creative ideas need to be reviewed.

This isn't the way to go. Making classes faster won't help anyone. AP scores will suffer, grades will suffer, and teachers will suffer. Good luck making this work.

Some children have a hard enough time with the semester system, changing it to a quarter system will only benefit the top performers and disadvantage the “good” students and those with limited resources.

Not an equitable plan. Only top tier students could handle a years worth of curriculum in nine weeks.

Our kids have already suffered learning from the Covid-19 lockdown. Compressing course material meant for a semester into a quarter doesn’t provide enough time for students to digest what they learnt. Being off a subject for a whole quarter also causes a big gap in their learning experience, which sets students back in their learning.

Monumentally bad idea.

I am concerned about moving to a modified Quarter System with proven learning losses due to the staggered quarters. Why can't we just stick with the regular 1-7 Block Semester schedule and plan for training teachers on how conduct effective Distance Learning classes. To better engage the students in Fall, virtual classes need to be held at the original class times and attendance should be taken. Teachers also need to be trained on best practices to reach out and engage students virtually.

This proposal is overly complicated and will likely put our students at a further disadvantage compared to students from other states.

This proposal has not been given the necessary due diligence given this has not been used in any other school districts (to the best of my knowledge).
I am especially concerned with the "AP program" under this quarterly schedule. The students are placed at a huge disadvantage which most likely will lead to lower test scores. I fear this will result in families choosing to "opt out" of the public school system in favor of a more proven learning environment.

I endured the Quarter System at Cal State. It seemed like we were always getting ready for finals rather than engaging and learning. Horrible way to learn.

What’s especially concerning is that several AP classes already go really fast and condensing the time span into 4 x 4 can be much more difficult and get us unorganized.

Please reconsider this quarter system! It will be difficult for students to learn all the materials in half the time!

Whoa! I'm going to be a Senior, taking 3 or 4 AP classees. That will be an overload, while trying to:
1/ take AP classes, accelerated, in half the time
2/ while taking SATs and ACTs because I couldn't take them this year
3/ while applying to college, writing essays and all the craziness that goes with that
4/ with midterms in October, right in the middle of all this craziness.
And what if my AP class isn't until 2nd quarter - then my 4th quarter I'll have only 5 or 6 weeks to learn half the material? And what about study/prep time?
DR. SKELLY - you. worry about teenagers not getting enough. sleep. now?
Please rethink this.
It is a bad idea!

Clearly not in the interest of the students!
