In the beginning of last year the University wanted to create a smoke free campus because as a healthcare professional school we should set an example. Well the initiative was stopped when the staff decided they did not like it, as many of them smoke. Well what kind of example is that.
Philadelphia Law states that people cannot smoke within 20 feet of a entrance/exit of a building. Not only does our school ignore this law but they encourages smoking by the doors by placing the ashtrays there.
The School should go smoke free. It is the responsible and professional thing to do. Smoking would still be allowed on streets and areas not owned by the school. The original initiative also called for a smoking area which is reasonable and I think would make it fair for everyone.
Smoke effects many students. Some are allergic to it. Some have asthma or other respiratory problems. Still others just find it unpleasant. To make the USciences community a more enjoyable place it should become a smoke free campus. At the very least the University should enforce Philadelphia law, banning smoking within 20 feet of all entrances and exits.
the school should be setting a better example if it wants to be taken seriously as a healthcare institution. stop letting people smoke right by the doors it is so annoying.

its honestly gross walking into class and having to hold my breath just to get past the cloud of smoke at the front door. move the ashtrays away from the entrance at least.
