Change Smith College Dining for the Better

I feel that there needs to be longer dining hours for all houses, not just a few, so students with busy schedules can be able to eat if they are paying for the meal plan. I also think extending the hours would give busy students more chances to take advantage of work study, so that they do not have to limit internship choices and extra curricular in order to work to pay for their already steep tuition. Also i feel the meals shouldn't be so carb and dessert heavy and that our dining halls could do much better in supporting a healthier diet. Providing simple proteins like cold cuts and eggs in every dining hall would be beneficial, as would decreasing the amount of butter and cream added to the hot food and finding other ways to make it flavorful. (For example switching to olive oil where possible and opting for simpler fare rather than food drenched in cream). I also feel that there should be an option to be able to live on campus and opt out of dining or limit their number of meals should it be too much money for that student to continue paying for dining while not being able to take advantage of it (due to a hectic schedule, etc).

This is especially important on weekends! It is not okay to have the one and only option for food on campus on a Friday night to be fried fish. Also, look for a correlation between these weekend meals and the number of students transported to the hospital due to drinking (mostly on an empty stomach), it's not a coincidence.

there is not a single day that passes by that I do not grunt in pain of the food that is given! We need better quality and options if we are going to be forced to pay so much money for the meal plan.

I've noticed the food quality has drastically declined since last year. This was further affirmed by the decline in food quality for Julia Child Day. I believe Julia Child would be very disappointed....

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when even the dining staff who cooked the food can't tell me if one of my major allergens are in it. Every time I go to eat, I'm gambling with my health.

good luck smithies! Smith was known for their dining plan. Too sad, this has changed since the 1980's

I think there are different possible answer to this question. One of them would be to have some dining halls serve healthier options. This would bring variety to our dining system, and give students a choice that they don't really have right now.

I think the meal is better than last year, but could it be healthier? Or a separate meal plan as suggested.

We need more veggies, and more veggie proteins that aren't soy products! Soy in large quantities is linked to cancerous growth!

Availability of non-balsamic vinegar would be nice.

It went downhill after my first year at Smith, 2011-12, and obviously hasn't gotten any better. It's not right for the amount of money it costs to attend such a highly regarded institution. I hope something is drastically done for the better of all atudents and their health.
