June 30, 2014 - A traffic light is needed at Smith and Kincaid Avenue in Burnaby. I have lived with my family near Burnaby Hospital since 1986 and this intersection is dangerous for everyone. Cars are accelerating across Kincaid Avenue from congested Boundary Road. Smith and Kincaid Avenues are now major through streets in Burnaby. We have seen too many accidents and cars ignoring the 4-way stop signs.
On Monday, June 30 at 5:45 pm under a sunny sky another pedestrian was hit while crossing. Myself and others stopped to help the injured man until first responders arrived. It was so encouraging to see so many people stopping to help.
Moms and children walking to Cascade Heights Elementary School compete with impatient people in cars rushing to work. Ambulances transporting patients to Burnaby Hospital have to navigate this busy 4-way stop.
If you want a traffic light at Smith and Kincaid Avenue, sign this petition. Please leave your information so that you can be contacted when a date has been set with Burnaby City council.
Let's work together to fix this dangerous intersection. Together, let's encourage Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and Burnaby City council to make the wise decision by having a traffic light installed at Smith and Kincaid Avenues immediately before another person is hit.

I was just out by the intersection watching the cars fly past the stop signs and it really makes me wonder how much longer we can get away with this before something truly awful happens again. I have been talking to some folks in the neighborhood who are just as worried as I am about the school kids and the ambulance sirens which seem to never stop screaming down the road lately.

I honestly never thought this would gain this much steam but here we are and people are actually listening to our worries about the intersection safety. It feels like the tide is turning and I am just so genuinely moved that so many neighbors care about the kids walking to school and the hospital traffic as much as I do.

I was hit (as a pedestrian) at this intersection years ago and they needed a traffic light then. Now I am sure it is even busier with traffic. The need is even greater now.
I don't live in the immediate area but I drive through that intersection everyday to and from work and I can attest to its danger for both motorists and pedestrians, particularly during rush hour. The fact that it's a bus route further complicates the problem as transit users try to cross the intersection and I've witnessed many close calls over the years.
There is too much traffic and too much speeding on Smith road especially between Canada Way and Kincaid. That stretch of road has no crosswalks, signs, lights or speed bumps. There is no sidewalk on the West side of the street for most of that stretch of road as well. Cars are travelling too fast and it is very dangerous for pedestrians and also for vehicles trying to turn onto Smith from side streets.
I live right next to this intersection. I was home Monday night but I don't recall hearing any commotion outside. It is a crazy intersection though. Lots of people do not even stop. So many times I've come up to it, being the first to arrive, and someone comes just after and doesn't even stop because they can't possibly wait the 10 seconds to let me go first like they are supposed to.
This is very much needed. We live in the area, and I have almost been hit at this intersection numerous times as a very careful (and quick!) pedestrian. It's also a pretty scary intersection when driving, but walking is the worst. We really need this light.
Bring on the lights
Stop these drivers before someone is killed.

This four way stop is dangerous. Our two children attend cascade heights elementary and we can't trust them to walk to school on their own because the risk of being hit when crossing Kinkaid is just too high. A traffic light with a cross walk would be much safer and would help to slow down the traffic in that area.
