Googling "k-8 vs k-5" seems to indicate k-8 is the better choice (actual research articles, not just op-ed).

We would urgently request to to consider making College Park Elementary a K through 8 Mandarin Immersion program. Please consider this for your 12/11/14 School Board Topic.

Academic continuity from K to 8. Faculty, textbooks, curriculum, leads to a stronger student. Students need support for Mandarin, the current middle schoolers at Bayside in Mandarin without family language support can be lost at Bayside.2. Maximizes resources and staff for students and families, maximizes use of the school district budget in purchasing materials, software and specialized materials to support Mandarin. Chineselibrary, computer lab, staff, so that a Mandarin teacher at a middle school is not all alone and a child with no Mandarin at home is not without support. 3. Minimizes confusion for parents and staff --STEM, STEAM, GATE, Mandarin all on one campus creates competing interests and advocacy priorities.4. Growing desire for Mandarin, reference the San Mateo paper article. We have room to grow on the CP campus.5. Traffic easing, minimizing the number of cars going back and forth CP and Bayside.

College Park has improved dramatically and has the capability to continue Mandarin immersion. Bayside has too many programs, and is not yet prepared for Mandarin.

I have a 6th grader in the Mandarin program at Bayside and a 4th and 2nd grader taking Mandarin at College Park. Would love for there to be a K-8 Mandarin program at College Park.

This is a sensible idea and is synergistic to all of the changes already planned for Bayside, Parkside and North Shoreview school programs.
