If the average ambient noise is already at 65-90db at night, why would this new law regulates bars not to exceed 60db? Take Honolulu Chinatown for example, it was know as the entertainment district since the 50's, new residents who move in to this area should have known better. Of course I mean bars must obey the current regulation of 75 db after 10pm (I believe). This law IS GOING TO KILL many restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and especially the music scene in Honolulu. This industry generates lots of taxable income and hire many people on this island, is the State of Hawaii really this clueless? Totally disagree to this bill!

The bill was proposed by Karl Rhodes. It was in response to noise complaints from various residents in building in the Downtown area. Liquor Commission (who is opposed to this bill) would be responsible for enforcement, and the Liquor License holder would be subject to fines or revocation of their license. The motives for this wether it be for capitol gain to or appease a minority of residents who seem to have an issue with moderate noise in the bustling downtown city is unknown.

How did this petition get proposed and by who? Who would be monitoring and when? Is this a way for monetary fines to be imposed on venues or performers or patrons? Will this affect venues like Waikiki Shell? Is this a method for the state to get more money out of the people? I want to understand this clearly. Anyone, please respond.

This is an unrealistic bill. As someone who lives in Chinatown, mopeds and buses (the beeping from the knelling buses can be heard loud and clear more than 24 floors up) make much more noise pollution than any bar or restaurant. Don't kill the good vibe that Downtown has--bars, restaurants and live music venues are essential to any good city!

As a working musician in Honolulu since 1982, I've seen the opportunites to work and live venues dry up to a trickle. It is hard enough already for musicians to earn a living. This bill would be the nail in the coffin for many musicians. Please DO NOT pass this bill.
