I live in Abblydale area in NE Calgary and have been dealing with and increased skunk presence for the past 2 years and can't keep up with their removal! They are brave enough to climb my front door stairs! I'm sure visitors will still be interested in coming to our city which may soon be known for this foul stench! Please Mayor Nenshi help our city before it gets worse!

My dog was sprayed in Erin Woods in our own yard 2 days ago. Enough is enough. We have been feeling trapped inside for 3 summers now out od fear of this happening. This is the 5th time he's been sprayed. We can take him for a walk in our neighborhood and see several skunks any given night...

In just the past two years I have dished out my fair share for getting rid of skunks in my Abbydale area and if anything, the problem has gotten worse. I have even had one climb my front stairs and sit at my door! My paychecks are only so much! Without help from the city and or government I can only see the problem getting worse seeing as they can have 5 - 7 babies and can mate as early as 10 mths old! This may seem minor now but if not curbed this can soon get out of hand. This seems to be a health hazard in the making if they are brazin enough to be so close to the public.

I've lived in this area for 20 yrs.. never has this problem been as bad as it is now, I have dogs which keep them out of the backyard ,however they are fearless /brazen enough to come up to the front door and of course my dogs go ballistic.......200.00 for us to pay for disposal give me a break what is the purpose of animal control? and its already out of hand these skunks are huge what are they feeding on if people use the bins?

I live in tuxedo and had them nesting under the back of my house. When they would spray it would make the stench inside the house unbearable. At one point them smell became so bad we had to move out of the house for a week. I called the city the zoo and fish and wildlife and everyine said they couldnt help. I called a pest control company who wanted $265 pet animal to trap and move them. The price was just to much, so i started researching the little buggers, and learned how to trap them and where i could release them safely.
The city wont admit its a problem but in a 4 month period i trapped and moved 23, yes that number is right. 23 skunks of all ages and sizes, i was moving each one to the same area outside the city limits so each skunk trapped was a new one. There are apprx 20,000 skunks inside the city limits, each female can give birth to 5 to 7 kits in a litter. With very few natural predators inside city limits they are going to get out of control very soon.

The City of Windsor in Ontario tried to eradicate the skunk with a cull - they spent quite a bit of money and concluded it had no effect overall.

I normally don't take the time to point out the stupidity of people's comments, however, yours has irked me in more ways than I can count FYI: I don't need to go to the library, I have a degree, in environmental sciences and zoology.
1. How the hell is it a health hazard: RABIES. I put it in caps so you can research it. Either directly transmissible to humans through a bite from a rabid skunk, or a bite to a dog/cat and then to a human. Rabies, in case you don't know is BAD. And skunks that are out in day time, or that show no hesitation or fear in approaching humans may have rabies.
2. yes, we have been living with skunks, however, in the past few years it has got much, much worse in part due to development and in part to due idiots like you (I will get to that later), and skunks can cause significant structural damage to properties. I don't care if it is a skunk, a cat or my neighbours kid, if something is causing significant damage to my home, I want it out.
3. Normal people put scraps out: No, IDIOTS put scraps out. You are encouraging wild animals to depend on humans for food. you are removing the natural population control of food scarcity and you are removing fear of developed areas from a WILD ANIMAL. If you "care about animals" leave them the hell alone. When a skunk gets hit by a car, that's on you, when someone traps/kills a skunk that is too domesticated, that's on you. When your neighbours 5 year old gets rabies, that's on you too. Which leads me to my next point
5. "are you saying they don't walk away" YES THAT IS WHAT WE ARE SAYING. Again, because of morons like you that get teary eyed over "fuzzies" and don't realize that you have disrupted the natural relationship between humans and skunks. Skunks are becoming much more aggressive towards humans because dbags like you have taught them we are snacky givers.
