Gloversville Skate Park
Dear Council Members and City Officials, 8/10/2011 We, the undersigned, would like to see the addition of a skateboard/bmx bike park in Gloversville, New York. The City of Gloversville has been generous in accommodating all types of facilities within the city for recreation. We have beautiful parks that hold fairs, concerts, and fundraising events. However, no such place exists for community members and visitors to enjoy skateboarding legally. Our society is changing. Even modest skateboard parks are getting more use than local sports fields, tennis, or basketball courts combined; as evidenced by the recent opening of the skateboarding/bmx park in Northville, NY. Every day, skateboarders/bikers venture out into the streets and along the sidewalks of our beautiful city. It is unfortunate that our community members are at RISK of getting ticketed, fined, and possibly having their skateboards confiscated for trying to enjoy a sport they love. Even with these repercussions, skateboarding still continues in the streets due to the lack of this type of facility. If a free public skateboard/bmx park were constructed, there would be a noticeable decrease in illegal skateboarding/biking on private and public property. We could give kids within our community a positive outlet for their energy, and a safer environment for them to grow up in. At least, they would have a place to call their own. The City of Gloversville could create a DESTINATION for people to come from far and wide. Economic activity would increase within the community and around the park from people visiting the Gloversville Skate Park. It could possibly bring people from all over the Country and create a way to put Gloversville on the map for having pro athletes. We support the construction of a free public skateboard/bmx park in the City of Gloversville, New York. It would be a huge benefit and great addition to the community. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. We appreciate your support on the matter.
