SJSU Campus Labyrinth

Downshifting is the act of reducing daily stress by taking the time for self-reflection. It is one of nine key lifestyle changes recommended by longevity experts, and is a behavioral trait that has been extensively studied in the past. A good way to practice downshifting is by walking through a Labyrinth, a pattern of pathways without walls or dead ends that has simple goal: get to the center. Labyrinths are very inclusive, as they are not specific to any one religion or culture, and they have been known to aid in relaxation with physiological benefits such as slowing breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. With all the chaos of working and existing in a high-stress environment like Silicon Valley, maximizing the opportunity to downshift by installing a Labyrinth on SJSU campus can influence behavioral patterns and contribute to a positive health impact of the community. We, the undersigned, are concerned students and citizens who urge the Campus Planning Board to support downshifting in the community.
