The city council finally greenlit the bag ban and I am shaking because I honestly did not think they would actually pull the trigger on this after all the back and forth. It is finally happening so lets keep our eyes peeled to see how the rollout goes next month …

Final supporters
90+ communities within Massachusetts have banned single use plastic bags within their municipalities. A group of active residents have sent a draft ordinance to City Council for consideration. The Purpose of the ordinance is listed below.
The reduction in the use of single-use plastic bags is a public purpose that protects the land and marine environment and waterways, minimizes litter, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Furthermore, single-use plastic bags create a burden for solid waste collection and recycling facilities, clog storm drainage systems, and require the use of millions of barrels of crude oil nationally for their manufacture. The purpose of this ordinance is to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags that are being used, discarded, and/or littered, and to promote the use of Reusable Bags and Recyclable Paper Bags by Retail Establishments in the City of Malden (the “City”).
Please sign if you agree Malden should move forward immediately with a single use plastic bag ban.

I was walking by the storm drains earlier and just thinking about how much plastic junk is sitting in there right now which makes this whole thing feel so much more urgent because honestly why are we still doing this when so many other towns have already moved on. Someone sent me a message about how these bags are just everywhere in our parks and I keep telling people that we are really going to make them look at this finally.

I think we can do this. And we can call on community arts to do malden re-useable bags that fund local artists. If businesses charge 10 cents a paper bag and give 5 cents off for reusing a reusable bag, and charge nothing if using a Malden Arts based bag. More folks would be incentivized.
Every time I go to Stop & Shop with my reusable tote bags to shop, I am always shocked by the number of single-use bags per person that get used. We need to stop that. If Boston can do it, so can Malden.
We try to reuse these bags as much as possible if we get them. The big problem is JRM won't recycle them!
The public does not see many of the plastic bags that flow through the storm water systems or are windblown into our rivers and sink out of view. Then the bags degrade but do not decompose. Also plastic bags degrade recycling by misuse. Plastic bags ruin potential recycling materials. Thank you.
This is a necessity for Malden. Litter is a major issue in our community and thin films are not recyclable in our system. This should be an easy environmental win.

I agree to ban plastic bags in Malden. People most of the time is not responsible to use or dispose plastic bags properly making a major environment problem.

It is time. Malden’’s trees look like they are growing plastic bags... there’s no need for such a destructive wasteful product.
