Single-Sex Prisons in WA

The Nelson Mandela rules entitle women to sex-specific spaces, why does WA think it’s about Australia’s international treaty obligations? Other jurisdictions have allowed biological males to self-select into women’s prisons - including baby rapists, males who have murdered and dismembered their female partners and other assorted brutal predators. The predictable outcomes occurred - women prisoners and wardens were attacked, raped and intimidated. This is foreseeable harm, are you prepared for the lawsuits that will follow if you persist in your failure of duty of care to the women in your charge?

Keep men out of women’s prisons. I can’t believe its 2020 and we have to fight for single sex spaces for vulnerable women, including indigenous women who are overrepresented in our prison system for lower grade “crimes”.

Potentially violent male criminals should not be housed with female prisoners. I can't believe we have to spell this out.

vulnerable women deserve more protection. Most offending women have a history of trauma and a lot would have experienced sexual assault and abuse. We cannot put others rights before their safety.

Do you want your daughters forced to touch men's penises? Or is it just other people's daughters?

The ramifications of this are unthinkable to be honest!!

Please keep our women safe. A man in a dress is NOT a woman. A man with no penis in a dress is NOT a woman!

Biological females need protection and segregation from biological males. Let's face it many are in jail because of previous abuse by males when younger. This is only common sense.

I don't understand why men who are criminals, are being taken seriously when they claim they are women, when they are serving time in prison precisely because their choices have been illicit. Oh the irony. Men can never be women and they have no right to step foot inside a women's correctional facility. Single-Sex Prisons.

Women and children in the corrections setting deserve safety and security. Placing male-bodied people in that setting endangers our most vulnerable people - women and children.

No woman in prison should be forced to share spaces with male bodied people many of whom may have committed crimes of violence or sexual assault.

To protect the dignity & safety of women, prisons need to remain single sexed. In other countries, Canada for example, women have been sexually assaulted by trans identified males (transwomen) in mixed sex prisons. Women in Western Australia should not be put at increased risk of rape & sexual assault by the inclusion of transwomen in their prison spaces.

Biological sex must be acknowledged and the sex must be the determinator in descisions such as where an individual is imprisoned, showers, toilets and any other situation or location which biological females may be vulnerable. To allow biological males who identify as women into sex based locations or situations is a gross violation of rights. Furthermore, is poses a very real risk (as seen in the number of assaults (including sexual assault) that have occured in other countries to famale prison staff and female inmates at the hands of transwomen (biological males who identify as women)). Sex based rights and protections including same sex (not gender) prisons must be upheld.

Given that men are far more likely to be imprisoned for violent crimes than women it should go without saying that prisons should be sex segregated for the safety of women inmates.

We need to ensure the safety and well being of women who are prisoners. Men in women's prisons is clearly a safety risk for those women. There have been documented instances of trans identified men in women's prison actually attacking and raping the women. Educate yourselves and do better!

Prisons need to be sex segregated not gender segregated. Women should be safe from male violence.

Women's groups must be consulted before implementing policies that profoundly compromise their safety. Women's rights are human rights.

Women’s sex-based rights must be protected- female inmates should not be housed with inmates who are biological males (many of whom are intact males and pose a threat to women’s safety - we have already seen rapes and sexual assaults in Canada, UK and Ireland).
