I understand that babies with these disorders cost a lot of money to insurance companies and tax payers if a family does not have private insurance. These babies are not eligible for organ donation. They are typically just seeking basic care, heart hole repairs, and they are more susceptible to hospitalization with colds and flu's. If the cost is too high, give the parent the option to pay out of pocket. When a family is receiving State funded medical care, they have to put a "cap" on it. Taxpayers are the one's who will end up paying for all these procedures in the end. Before a hospital gives a DNR without parental consent, give them the option to pay out of pocket. When you decide to have a special needs child, I'm sure you've taken into consideration all the additional costs you will incur. It's not the public's responsibility to pay for in home care, or repeated hospitalizations. No child should be denied basic care. What is basic and what is "heroic's" has to be decided by someone. I do feel that reviving a dying child who has a life limiting condition is unethical. That is different than basic care which all people deserve.

Placing a DNR order on a child without the parents' knowledge or consent is wrong. It shouldn't happen, but I know that it does.

As a medical professional, I believe that anyone involved in issuing a DNR without the parents' or family's consent should lose their license.

Life-sustaining care and a 'do not resuscitate' order is a decision to be made by parents of the child, no one else. How terrible that a petition such as Simon's Law is necessary is the United States. This grieves my heart.

Having personally experienced how doctors made medical decisions for my great niece at the time of her birth which was not what her parents wanted, was just horrible to listen too and watch. They did not want to do any life saving measures because they said she would die any way. My great niece is now 2 yrs old and making great strides in her development. She is behind in her development do to the doctors withholding oxygen and food. Simon's Law has to go into effect to help our children and their parents. Every child has the right to be given every chance to survive regardless of what the doctors THINK they know. Not every child is text book. My great niece sure isn't!

My daughter had a heart transplant 2yrs ago. She was 13yo. It was very difficult transplant. This Simon's Law must be pasted. Please consider our children...who will surprise you on what living is really like!

It's too much. Too many decisions are made by HMOs and 3rd parties. A medical decision should be made by a patient or their parent with all options presented to them by their physician. Making a child a DNR without parental consent is taking away their civil rights. Why do prisoners get more rights than innocent babies? Why are these babies not covered by the Americans with disabilities act? Are they not people too? I am disgusted by the medical community and I am a physician. God help us all.
