Farah Bassyouni, Freshmen, Senator Petition
I want to have a large role in this new home of mine, and I think joining the Student Senate is the way to do it. I'm from Cairo, Egypt (shoutout to the iwu international students gang), I go by she/her/hers, and I'm an English-writing major with a minor in Journalism.
I came here to gain new perspective and share my own. We've all grown up in different backgrounds and have come here with various shared experiences, and that's a large reason why I chose iwu.
I got a lot of experience from high school working with activist and social justice groups, as well as holding numerous leadership positions in feminist, sex-ed, other student governments, community service, environmental, and writing-related club activities. In the featured photo, I'm with an executive team fundraising for the school's literary magazine with a Halloween Photobooth.
I organized and helped organize similar fundraising events for multiple charities and orphanages around Egypt during my time in highschool. My senior year, I was President of NHS and Editor-in-Chief of the school's literary magazine. I held a lot of Media leadership positions in other clubs as well, and collectively participated in a new event almost every week that aimed to support a cause in Cairo (and also entertain the student body, so I like to think we had fun).
There was always a small amount of us trying to create change in the environment, and trying to shift people's mindsets for the better. Now that I'm in an environment that feels more open-minded and progressive, I am being pulled towards change rather than always being the one pulling. Its refreshing, and inspiring, and I want to do so much more of that during my time here.
I always strive to be the person bringing others together, creating an accepting and loving environment where people can help and be helped. I hope to sit on the Inclusion and Awareness committee and help perpetuate those values of empathy and inclusivity. Sign and let's make it happen!
