The selection of candidates for the professorship positions offered at the Academy, should in the first place insure the democratic process of rotation and selection upon a written application documenting skills, work experience and possibly the potential to work within an educational institution. Nevertheless, all these parameters ultimately serve to insure that the students of this institution receive and have access to a dynamic and well structured education from diverse sources. In democracy, a large percentage of consenting individuals can influence a global decision. We by this mean intend to demonstrate that the replacement of Susanne Winterling from her professor position will have more negative effects in our education than beneficial ones. Not only because it would halt a common path we have been sharing but, because her influence has had tremendous positive impact for the students that have had the pleasure to work with her. People like Susanne are essential in an institution like this because they promote and support free thinking and most importantly thinking outside the box - what I believe to be the source of all great creative processes. From my personal experience and from conversations with other fellow students, it is hard to come by a tutor/professor that gets involved so deeply in her students practice and that invests so much of her personal time and energy in making sure each practice is treated with honesty and engagement. If this democratic system of selection is based on merit and truly for the students benefit than there is no reason why prof. Susanne M. Winterling's contract should not be extended. My best regards, Tiago Bom

Lost in a dilemma last summer and in need of advise. A skype conversation later I was ready to make a decision - not because Susanne told me what to do, but because she asked the right questions. She does not operate with hierarchies or other premises she does not believe in, yet she has a great impact on my work - through the amazing people she invites to the school such as Chris Kraus, her shelf in the library, round table discussions, museum visits, a trip to Bergen or Lofoten, the winter seminar at kunstnernes hus, critiques, sharing thoughts and reflections - overreaching wider horizons.

I feel very fortunate to have Susanne as a supervisor and mentor. To share my own process with a person whose attention is honest and genuine has been a great support in all that I do. She is always engaged and present for her students, something that motivates, encourages and also reminds me that I’m part of a group where I am being followed-up. I experience Susanne to be a person who is attentive, a wonderful listener, and someone who always takes the needs of students strongly into consideration. I wish for her to stay here, as I see it very important in my process at the academy and my work. With her generous personality and all that she contributes to, I see Susanne truly as an inspiration. Why would art students make a petition for some professor to stay in his position? Not because it's a good thing to do, not for a goodwill, and certainly not to make the professor happy. It is purely egoistic. Soothing mellowness of Norwegian Academy leaves tensions outside the borders and welcomes with a thin smile. However passionate the students are auras are hard to beat. Art academy is not the place for mellowness and soothing smiles. I am an egoist. I look for tension, knowledge (the knowing if you will), serious passion and consciousness. I also look for inspiration. Susanne Winterling is all of the mentioned above. Ksenia Aksenova 3BA

Susanne is an incredible driving force who inspires and challenges her students. It would be a huge loss to the academy to see her go, particularly for those students who are in their final year of studies and who have built up a very strong relationship with Susanne. Having only just gotten to know Susanne myself, I am already very impressed by her teaching and her ability to engage in and question my work. It has been a long time since I felt inspired and challenged by a tutor in a similar way. It is a rare thing to come across in life and I want to express my deepest wishes that Susanne will be able to carry on teaching at the Academy. Ellakajsa Nordström 1MA

In addition to all of the comments here, Susanne is one of the most sophisticated people I have met so far, and I believe that comes from her integrity as a teacher and an artist. This is a rare quality to come by, and I am especially thankful to have spent time with her at this stage of my life as a student and also as a young person on the road – and hope for more. To me, Susanne has played a very important role as my main tutor by constantly challenging and questioning my practice in a very constructive and critical way. I strongly feel that she pushes and guides me and my practice forward with great accuracy, knowledge and passion. I also believe that her genuine interest and great belief in ART is not only highly inspiring and useful, it's also quite rare and therefore invaluable at an institution that aims to produce a new generation of artists. I had a chance to study under Susanne's supervision for 3 years now. I greatly appreciate her work and consider it to be one of the main reasons for what I've achieved during these years. Her sharp critique and opinions expressed during individual tutorials and conversations benefited my artistic practice invaluably and her professorship at the Academy is the most important part in my art education. What I learned in my 3 years of art education at the academy is how to learn. I found out that the most important thing is not to ask answers or to search for solutions, but to learn from how other people struggle with issues around their artistic practice, the art world, the art market economy, and contemporary society. From my experience Susanne is one of few professors at the art academy, with whom I can have a fight during tutorials. Which means that she didn’t give me an illusion of easy escape or gentle suggestion of surrender, but she could keep asking questions, which actually matters for me, including her self-reflection in her standpoint. Apart from her contributions of technical, social, theoretical knowledge, for me, especially in my last semester in bachelor, it is a huge loss if she has to leave the academy. And I believe it is the same for other students, and I wish for the students at the academy in the future to have the same opportunity as I had.

As a student who has had a very fractured education (partly due to all the professors shifting around) it is extremely important to keep Susanne as my main professor next semester; my final semester here at the Academy. She has been such a beacon of clarity, never shy when criticizing but always positive and keen on helping us (the students) produce the highest quality work possible and then framing it within a broader context. The level of discourse Susanne promotes within our class structure is admirabe, unique, and comprehensive. No one is ever made to feel stupid or out of place. The collective feeling of our group is also very special, something I have never felt before within an academic setting. For all of these things, I am so grateful for her time here. And it would be such a shame for the Academy to lose her, both for me personally and all the students who will come after. Best, Jessica Williams 2MA
