My good friend Nick Clarke isn't the most religious man, but this year he is participating in Lent. In an attempt to save his soul, he has made the rash decision to give up alcohol.

I think what Nick is doing is very brave and admirable, but it is also extreme. There are many things a person can give up for Lent, like leg day, for example.
