Last year WLWV District Schools and surrounding Districts experienced an outbreak of Lice. When we received our first letter from my children's classes, we were surprised to find out that children can return with the "Nits" (Lice eggs) in their hair. It is extremely important that the "Nits" are removed or they will hatch and the cycle starts all over again and spreads. After the 8+ letter, we lost faith that this current policy is a wise decision. (Also! keep in mind that not all Lice cases or reported)
WLWV School District currently allows children to return to school with "Nits" (Lice eggs) in their hair with an expectation the "Nits" will be removed eventually. The bugs (Lice) must be removed but not the "Nits" right away.
If you go to the WLWV District School Website, click on the Depts., then click on Nursing/Health Service, and finally click on the Head Lice link. Check out the 2nd to last FAQ's that I have listed here:Why does it seem like some kids never get rid of head lice when they get it?Usually it is because a step in the treatment plan has failed or a step is missed, especially nit removal. As you see, they say it here themselves that it spreads because "Nits" are not removed.
Staying home until the "Nits" are removed is no different than staying home until 24hr fever free, 24hr diarrhea free, Hand, Foot, Mouth free, 5th's disease free, Pink Eye Free, 24hr Strep Treatment started, etc.
I have even contacted the CDC and they say they only make their recommendations but do tell Districts what to do. Each District makes their own policies so, please sign this petition and voice your opinion to have WLWV District change to a "No Nit" policy.
Also, I advise you to check out videos on how to effectively remove Lice & their Nits to see how expensive and time consuming this process takes.
Thank you for your support!!
