We're living in an age where white people are being encouraged to think of their rights as being threatened by the gains made by people of color towards social and political equality, and to fight to reverse these gains. Fellow white people: you're getting played...and worse than that, you're deputizing yourselves as servants of a white supremacist system that ultimately doesn't really care about you or your kids either. Students have worked hard with their academics. They took charge of their education. It is unfair and unconstitutional to stop them from wearing chords during graduation.

As a person who to the lead over 15 years ago to mobilize students to reduce disproportionate minority contact (dmc), I fully support this petition. All parents and students are entitled to due process and access to a free appropriate education. Current policies promote zero tolerance, DMC, and ultimately widens the achievement gap due to absences and/or missed days of school. This policy encourage school leadership to review their decision-making points and school-based culture and environment that will address antecedents that may reduce bias and unnecessary suspensions. I am also a volunteer surrogate parent for guilford county schools and I've been to so many manifestation meetings that could have been avoided if IEP's were written and implemented appropriately. Thank you!

Facts: GCS Board’s Policy Committee, has recommended a policy change so that parents have the right to appeal a short-term suspension. The right to appeal short-term suspensions is allowable by NC law, and the right to appeal long-term suspensions to the Board of Education is guaranteed. Many states and school districts also guarantee the right to appeal short-term suspensions in order to protect children. As has been stated many times, a suspension would not be stayed (a student would not remain in class) if the principal determines that this would pose a safety concern. Furthermore, violence generally falls under long-term suspensions, not short-term suspensions which are given for lesser infractions. In accordance with NC State law, the superintendent does not hear appeals of long-term suspensions, the right is reserved for Boards of Education only!!
