As members of The NC NAACP, The Greensboro Branch NAACP, The High Point Branch NAACP, The Pulpit Forum of Greensboro and Vicinity, The Greensboro Business League (GBL) and Members of the Guilford County Community, we sign this petition and solicit your signature to support the recommendation of the Policy Committee of the Guilford County Board of Education to provide students the right to appeal short-term suspensions (10 days or less) given by school-based administrators. The right to appeal a principal’s discipline decision is allowable by North Carolina General Statute. Furthermore, the right to appeal in the United States is a moral and legal norm, and is consistent with our values as Americans.
The due process clause of the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution says that states may not “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” The Supreme Court has ruled that students have a “legitimate entitlement to a public education as a property right.” That right may not be taken away without first providing due process protections.
The Guilford County School Board is scheduled to vote on this amendment at their next meeting on November 12, 2019 at 6:00 PM.

We are drifting closer to that first big hundred mark and honestly it feels like we finally have some real momentum building up here. If you could just grab a few people you know and get them to add their names right now it would be huge for us when we walk into that board meeting because I really think they are starting to notice us.

I support this petition because in high school I was one of the targeted minorities,who had gotten suspended, whether in or out of school, on multiple occasions for ambiguous reasonings.
This proposal send reasonable to me. I have seen some questionable suspensions with difficult outcomes that may not have been in the child's best interest. The ability to appeal is just.
I was suspended at Smith High School for being assaulted in gym locker room by 2 females with no witnesses in 1986... Absolutely life changing experience not to be heard.
Enactment of this policy is a step in the right direction to deal with the disgraceful state we find ourselves in due to mass incarceration, substantially resulting from the "School to Prison Pipeline" to which current policies of short-term suspension is a contributing factor.
The Fourteenth Amendment clearly applies to children and their parents in our schools . I haven’t read anywhere that it doesn’t. So, whenever we deny anyone due process rights to anyone, we become dangerously vulnerable for that to be denied to everyone. This petition has my full support.
Children with disabilities should have the right to be heard!
The right to due process and appeal are not only constitutional mandates, they are also moral and ethical measures. The children of Guilford County, especially those disproportionately impacted by disciplinary actions should absolutely have this right.
