Sign Can Shine: Bring Sign Language into Ontario Education

"Language is a different vision of life." - Federico Fellini
Within our schools we are promoted to learn languages that mainly affect us when traveling or in future employment opportunities, but never have we considered to incorporate the language of members in our own community into our school systems. The incorporation of Sign Language into our educational system should be treated with the same respect as other languages such as French and Spanish. Deaf children are placed in mainstream schools and are forced to adapt with other children that aren't educated on how to communicate with them.
Sign Language
still provides employment opportunities but mainly will create a unity
among all members of society. There will always be Deaf people in our
communities and eventually in our schools due to cost complications.
French and Spanish aren't a necessity when English is able to be learned
and spoken, however Deaf people are unable to speak those languages and
have one major source of communication. We as a society should bring
every member closer together, and it all starts with language. Language
is what will unite us in the end. The Deaf should be heard and Sign
Language should be a vital piece of our educational system.
Language is the largest influence on the succession of it's speakers/signers, and can change the way we as a society grows and creates positive change. The Deaf will no longer be isolated and will be able to thrive. We have the power to create the change that will sever the gaps and bring a true sense of community.
