I support the IMMEDIATE and PERMANENT DECOMMISSIONING of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

This nuclear plant is near active earthquake faults and is on the coast, with a seawall only 14 ft above high tide. It was originally designed to withstand a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, and later upgraded to withstand a 7.0 quake. However, the Fukushima plant was subjected to Tsunami waves which peaked at 133 ft and a magnitude 9.0 quake (with shaking 100 times more vigorous than a 7.0 quake). Safety systems such as battery backups have been found to be nonfunctional for over 3 years at a time, and the plant has more safety violations than any other plant in the nation.

Any large earthquake could cause a serious meltdown at this plant and result in the permanent evacuation of an area from Dana Point to San Diego and displace millions of residents.

The plant is off-line at this time due to a radioactive steam release in January, 2012, resulting in the realization that steam generator tubes, replaced only 18 months earlier, are experiencing rapid deterioration as if they were 15 years old, and experts are still baffled as to what is going on and how to fix it.

Now is the time to permanently decommission this plant for the safety of all concerned.
