Since 2014, the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (NY-DD) has made changes to how people with DDs receive services, putting an emphasis on preparing them for “integrated employment” (e.g. custodian at an office building). This has caused the closure of “sheltered workshops” (places where the majority of employees have a DD). These workshops provide a familiarity and comfort for people with DD. Integrated employment doesn’t work for everyone, and certainly does not for my uncle. If not for sheltered workshops, he would not have been able to work. I support choice for people with DD. By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for the continuation of sheltered workshops in New York State.

I have been reading your stories about loved ones who thrive in familiar work environments. It confirms what I see with my uncle every day because one size does not fit all. I am currently reaching out to local representatives to ensure they understand why this choice is so vital.

Seeing this kind of momentum makes me think of my uncle and the community he relies on. It is powerful to watch so many people recognize that one size does not fit all for those with developmental disabilities.

It is important that we keep all options available to people with DD. Not every solution is the right one for every person. Choice is important for each person to be able to reach their full potential.
My nephew has DDs and at one time was I integrated employment, and it just didn't work for him. He does much better in a sheltered workshop.
Please keep this valuable sheltered workshops program going.
Keep them open!!!
We need to make things easier for people with developmental disabilities, not harder.
I agree. Many of these people with disabilities need a warm, supportive, nurturing working environment with guidance and positive regard.

Sheltered workshops offer a comfortable and safe place for people with DD to gain self worth and a sense of purpose. Please dont take away the opportunity for them to grow and gain confidence in themselves. We all deserve to have that experience.
