As a retired subway train motorman , I feel this piece is insulting to anyone who earns their living behind the controls of a train. What kind of "technology" are they using--a radar gun designed to determine the speed of a pitched baseball? Who trained that reporter in the use of that radar gun? How about she ask someone who's a locomotive engineer or subway motorman? This is nothing but fear-mongering disguised as journalism, and she needs to retract her statement and apologize, not just to those in the craft, but to the riding public as well.

Meg Baker, YOU are an idiot! I am an NJT Engineer with decades of experience. Your reporting is flawed in every way. You have absolutely no basis for which to report that a train is speeding. The trains in this story are not violating any operating rules or or train handling practices. The experts in your story are not qualified locomotive engineer nor is the safety personnel and has NO expertise on the subject of operating trains, engines, or the physical characteristics of the territory. It is no doubt the reason why NJT would not return your calls because this story is absolute NONSENSE! I stand with every single Locomotive Engineer on NJT and other Regional carriers to say you are misrepresenting a story for the sole purpose of sensational infotainment.

I saw the report and as a retired conductor for the LIRR you produced a false and fear on how trains are operated and plus you did not interview any train crews at all

After 25 years as a locomotive engineer for the LIRR, I find your report on "speeding" trains appalling. There are no facts present except for some that were made up by your report, and without any knowledge of the rules on said portions of track in which you reported.

I am a qualified locomotive engineer on the LIRR. Meg Baker should apologize on air for creating fear in the public with a bogus story. No one in that story was qualified to say what the speeds are. Only an NJT locomotive engineer or the FRA could say if those trains were speeding or not. Meg Baker interviews a Civil Engineer. That is just so ridiculous that I can't believe CBS, a credible news agency, allowed that to air. That really tarnishes the image and credibility of CBS. A Civil Engineer knows nothing about running a train.

Meg Baker and the CBS news team have created a false story to drum up views and ratings based on the erroneous statements of an unqualified railroad employee who IS NOT required to know speed limits along the NJT. There is no speed required by law or railroad rule that states trains must pass slower through stations. The speed limit through Secaucus Jct. on the lower level, the trackage shown in the clip with the train doing 38 mph, is capable of 60 mph movement at any time. Upstairs at Secaucus is even faster. The only employees required to know passenger and freight speed limits are Locomotive Engineers. They are the only ones who are thoroughly trained on them and the only ones required to know them inside and out for the duration of their careers.
None of the trains depicted in this bogus report were speeding. Just because a train is traveling at the posted speed limit does not mean it is speeding. If CBS News and its audience wants slower trains, prepare your commute time to be doubled.

I am a qualified LIRR conductor. I have been on the job for 14 years. And i dont even know the specific speeds over certain small stretches of track. But this woman feels it necessary to try to scare people with bogus reporting by asking people who have no rail experience what speed is safe. Its disgraceful. She should be ashamed. Next time talk to an actual rail road engineer. Not a pencil pusher civil engineer with no clue. Apology demanded.
