The clinic finally backed down and reversed their discriminatory policy against donors with children born with cleft conditions. They realized they could no longer hide behind outdated prejudices to exclude perfectly healthy women from the donation process. We forced them to recognize that a treatable condition is not a reason …

I have previously donated my eggs to a Fertility Clinic and was considered an healthy candidate. I was then accepted to carry out a second donation but fell pregnant with my own child. My partner was born with a Unilateral Cleft Lip & Palate and so my son was born in July 2014 with a Bilateral Cleft Lip & Palate. I am now categorised has an unsuitable donor. It this right or wrong? A. The cleft comes from my partner B. I never actually officially told the clinic I had a baby with cleft lip I sent them personal correspondence to show off my baby which they have used to apparently update my medical file and use as information to determine their decision C. Cleft Lip & Palate is not a life threatening nor terrible condition and can be corrected - would an adoption agency decline a child based on that they were born with a cleft? Do you think this is discrimination and should be changed?

The fertility clinic thinks they can just decide my medical status based on private photos I sent. They are dead wrong to classify a treatable condition as a disqualifier for my autonomy. I am currently digging into their discriminatory policies and they will not ignore this blatant overreach.

There are other ways to contact couples looking for egg donors. I used prideangel.com which allows donors and recipients to message each other. That way individuals can make up their own minds about these things rather than beurocracy from clinics getting in the way.

This is not ok! my beautiful niece was born with a cleft lip and palate and wouldnt change her for the world such a clever and well advanced child! I my mself cant have children so egg donors is a likely option and it wouldnt even phase me knowing the donor had birthed a cleft baby. As long as it was happy and healthy its not that big if a deal

when there is such a shortage of egg donors why would such a decision be made without looking into things. Even if cleft related issues were such a terrible thing - which they are not - in this case the genetic link was the child's father. It really sounds like we are so determined to erradicate those who are different in the search for a perfect child.

Not only is a cleft not a life threatening condition, but as the genetic trait in this case has clearly been passed on from the father not the mother, there is no reason at all not to allow egg donation!

I am aware the criteria in most fertility clinics are the same as far as Cleft Lip is concerned. My intention is to change this Cleft is not a terrible thing. The recipients should decide for themselves!!!
