Quality of life is important to the residents of Essex. In recent years, the town of Essex has become known as a popular place for tourism visitation. This demand created by tourists has led to a proliferation of Short Term Rental offerings in the town, specifically in the South near Colchester. With these unregulated lodgings has come a number of issues impacting the quality of life for nearby residents, with no recourse currently available for them to address these issues
Other communities with similar demand for tourist visitation have recognized the need for regulation of these types of rentals and have moved to enact same. These include Niagara On the Lake, Collingwood and Toronto.
The signers of this petition believe that council MUST ACT WITHOUT DELAY to regulate Short Term Rental accommodation..

Short term rentals have outnumbered available homes for families who want to remain in their home town. Buying a home for for anyone just starting out has become unattainable. We need affordable homes. Not places for party goes who have no regard for what they are doing to our small community!
Our Town has put in the time and money to remove the cottages that were on Jackson and created a beautiful park for all and the schoolhouse on Bagot. No to the sale and no more rentals. Only family homes on proper lots. No absentee landlords. The added headache of noise and traffic and they park all over the village. The rentals says, but they over fill and pack them in. No one cares about the families next door. You can't maintain from far away.
The trend in recent years of individuals making private residences available for short term rent has created a multitude of problems for adjacent property owners. None of these problems were apparent when zoning bylaws regulating residential properties were conceived and passed. It has become increasingly obvious that the shortfall must be addressed to avoid even greater problems in the future. I'm not suggesting that short term rentals of residential properties don't have a place, but their development requires municipal regulation to insure that adjacent property owners are not adversely affected.
This topic certainly needs to be discussed. I am in favour of increased tourism on CR-50 due to Winery proliferation, however residents are entitled to quiet occupation of their homes. So we should look to other municipalities for their guidance on moving forward.
Short term rentals make it very difficult for residents. Colchester now is mostly year round residents not like the 60s when it was mostly summer cottage people. Then it was party central all summer, that is not what the community wants again
If there are issues that can be addressed that’s great. But if you want wineries and shops and tourists, that’s STR.
STR have been very integral to the expansion of our tourism industry, especially since there are no hotels or motels in Harrow. But maybe it's time to decide how many and needed and where. I'm sure the current owners have invested lots of time, money and energy into making the current STRs welcoming, and I'm sure they are hopeful that this will continue. Maybe some market research is needed to determine our needs in the future.

This a beautiful residential area that families make their homes. This place that you want to put in would be right in the middle of a residential area. There are families that live in that area with children that have special needs that are able to go out and be safe in the area that they live. This would change drastically the parents would have to take drastic measures and change the home environment in order to ensure the safety of their children.
