December 14th, 2008. US President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki called a press conference to highlight a new agreement to say that all US Troops would be out of Iraq by 2012. During the conference, Muntadar al-Zeidi, an Iraqi Journalist, cried "This is a gift from the Iraqis; this is the farewell kiss, you dog!" and threw his shoe at the President. He ducked. Muntadar then repeated this but this time called "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!" Muntadar was wrestled to the ground, and taken into further custody. There is great worry about his situation, some even fearing for his life. This petition is for those who think that the arrest of Muntadar, or potential murder, is unjust, and that he should be brought back into the Iraqi population.

Updates

December 17, 2008

The silence from those in charge remains heavy but we are continuing to push for the release of Muntadar despite the lack of official updates. I am exhausted by the uncertainty surrounding his safety yet stopping now is simply not an option.

Reaching this level of support has been a heavy, exhausting process that makes the silence from those in power feel even colder. Yet your persistence keeps me moving when I feel like packing it in. We are not turning back now.

What he did was brave. He spoke for all the people who suffered these past years. Free him now!

He just wanted to show the world the pain of his people. No one should be tortured for throwing a shoe. This is wrong.
