This petition is against the forceful conversion of Shia Muslims to Sunnis in Sampang, Madura, East Java, Indonesia. 26 Shia refugees currently taking shelter at a sports center had been forced to sign statements saying that they were willing to convert to Sunni. Such coercion violated Article 28 of the 1945 Constitution and Article 22 of Law No.39/2009 on human rights. Hundreds of Sampang Shiites were forced to take shelter at the sports center after hundreds of Sunni Muslims attacked and set ablaze their houses in Nangkernang village in Sampang in August. This is a clear violation of the laws of Islam itself which in no way promote forceful conversion to Islam and also a violation of human rights. We request all those who believe that every human being has the right to practice the religion of his choice to sign this petition and support these oppressed fellow human beings in Indonesia.
